A Texas Hill Country Wedding Guide, Everything You Need to Know
From Fredericksburg to New Braunfels, the Texas Hill Country has become one of the most sought-after wedding destinations in the South. Here's why, and how to plan yours.

Why the Hill Country?
The Texas Hill Country occupies a specific place in the American imagination, rolling limestone hills, live oak canopies, rivers running clear and cold through the summer heat, and towns that have maintained their character despite the growth of Austin and San Antonio on either side. For couples planning a destination wedding, it offers something increasingly rare: genuine sense of place.
The Landscape and the Light
Hill Country light is warm, golden, and long. Summer evenings stretch past 8pm with usable golden hour lasting forty-five minutes or more. The landscape, rolling hills, open meadows, vineyard rows, century-old oaks, gives photographers an enormous range of environments within a small geographic area. I've shot portraits in vineyard rows at Sunstone and under oak canopies at private ranches that look like entirely different parts of the world.
Fredericksburg
Fredericksburg is the hub of Hill Country wedding country, charming main street, excellent German-influenced food, and a surrounding landscape dense with vineyards and ranches that have been converted into event spaces. Contigo Ranch, Lost Draw Cellars, and Messina Hof are among the venues I return to regularly. Spring, when the bluebonnets and Indian paintbrush are in bloom, is the most requested season and books out eighteen months in advance.

New Braunfels and the San Antonio Area
New Braunfels sits between Austin and San Antonio and offers its own distinct character, the Guadalupe River, the German heritage of the town, and venues like Gruene Estate that blend historic architecture with Hill Country landscape. Couples based in San Antonio often choose this area for the proximity, but it draws destination couples from across the country for the scenery.
Practical Notes for Out-of-State Couples
I travel to Texas regularly for weddings and elopements, it's one of my most requested destinations outside California. For Hill Country weddings, I recommend building in a day before and after your event date for travel and location scouting. The region rewards couples who arrive unhurried and leave with time to spare.
