Calamigos Ranch

A sprawling ranch estate in the Santa Monica Mountains with creekside ceremony spaces, mature oak groves, and warm California countryside light.

The Ranch That Doesn't Feel Like a Venue

Calamigos Ranch has been hosting weddings for decades and it shows, not in the way that makes a place feel tired, but in the way that makes a place feel settled. The oak trees are enormous. The creek that runs through the property has been there long before the venue existed. The whole estate has the ease and permanence of somewhere that knows exactly what it is.

The Ceremony Spaces

Calamigos offers multiple ceremony environments, a creekside space under a canopy of sycamores, an open lawn against the mountain backdrop, a rustic barn interior for evening receptions. Each photographs differently and beautifully. The creek location in particular, in the late afternoon when the light filters through the sycamore canopy, produces portraits with a quality of light I've rarely encountered elsewhere.

Capacity and Atmosphere

Calamigos comfortably hosts larger weddings (up to several hundred guests) while maintaining an atmosphere that feels genuinely intimate. The property is large enough that different groups of guests never feel crowded into the same space. I've photographed here for couples of twenty and couples of two hundred and the images from both feel equally personal.

The Creek

The detail that separates Calamigos from most ranch venues in Southern California is the creek. Running through the center of the property, shaded by enormous sycamores that have been growing here for decades, the creek creates a ceremony and portrait environment unlike anything else in the Malibu area. The dappled light that filters through the sycamore canopy in the afternoon has a quality that I've never been able to fully explain, it's soft and directional at the same time, warm without being harsh, and it makes every portrait look like it was shot on film. Couples who choose the creek ceremony location consistently produce some of the most beautiful images I make all year.
