Sophie & Daniel's Sunrise Elopement in Malibu

A real elopement story, two people, a sea cliff, wildflowers from a roadside stand, and forty minutes of extraordinary Pacific light.

How It Started

Sophie called me on a Tuesday afternoon in late April. She'd been driving up PCH with no particular destination and had pulled over at El Matador State Beach on impulse. She stood at the top of the trail looking down at the sea stacks and the early evening light and called Daniel before she'd even walked to the water. By the time I spoke to her the next morning, they'd already decided.

The Morning

We met at the El Matador trailhead at 5:50am. The sky was still a deep blue-grey and the beach below was completely empty. Sophie had stopped at a roadside flower stand the afternoon before and had a loose bundle of white ranunculus and eucalyptus wrapped in brown paper. Daniel had coffee and the focused, quiet energy of someone who has made peace with the fact that this is actually happening.

The Ceremony

They stood at the water's edge as the light changed from grey to pink to the particular amber that Southern California coastlines do better than anywhere. Sophie's dress moved in the offshore breeze. Daniel read from a folded piece of paper and got through most of it before his voice gave out completely. Sophie held his face in her hands and waited. The ocean kept going.

Afterward

We spent another hour after the ceremony walking the beach and the cliff trail as the light shifted into full golden hour. By 8am the first other visitors were appearing at the trailhead. We had the best of it entirely to ourselves. Sophie said later that the two hours felt like a full day, that she couldn't believe how much had happened and how unhurried it all felt.

What I'll Remember

Elopements like Sophie and Daniel's are why I do this work. No timeline pressure, no logistical complexity, just two people fully present in a place that mattered to them. The images from that morning are some of the best I've made in nine years. If you're considering an elopement on the California coast, I'd love to talk about what yours could look like.
