How Far in Advance Should You Book Your Wedding Photographer? An Honest Answer.
The question I get asked more than almost any other, and the answer is probably earlier than you think.

The Short Answer
Earlier than you think. For peak season dates in California and Texas, spring and fall, any Saturday between April and November, most photographers worth booking are looking at 12 to 18 months out. I've had couples reach out in September for a May wedding and find my calendar already full. It happens more often than you'd expect.
Why Photographers Book Out So Far
A working wedding photographer typically shoots somewhere between 25 and 40 weddings a year. That sounds like a lot until you realize there are only 52 weekends in a year, and peak season concentrates demand into maybe 30 of them. The photographers whose work resonates with you, whose galleries you've been saving and whose style you'd recognize anywhere, those photographers are usually managing a waiting list by the time most couples start searching.
What Happens If You Wait
You book whoever is available. That's not a criticism, there are talented photographers who have openings at shorter notice for all kinds of legitimate reasons. But if you have a specific style in mind, a specific person whose work has moved you, waiting makes that harder to secure. Style match matters enormously in wedding photography. A technically competent photographer whose aesthetic doesn't align with yours will produce technically competent images you don't connect with.
The Exception: Elopements
Elopements are more flexible. Because the guest count is minimal and the logistics are simpler, elopement dates can sometimes be arranged on shorter timelines, a few months rather than a year. That said, popular locations like El Matador, Vasquez Rocks, and Point Dume have their own permit requirements and seasonal windows, so the location planning sometimes takes longer than the photographer booking.
My Honest Recommendation
If you have a date, reach out to photographers now. Not next month, not after the venue is confirmed, now. Most photographers, myself included, will hold a date for a short period while you make your decision. The conversation costs nothing and the peace of mind is worth everything.
One More Thing
Don't book a photographer before you've spoken to them. A portfolio can tell you a lot about technical skill and aesthetic sensibility, but the working relationship matters too. You'll spend your entire wedding day with this person. Make sure the conversation feels easy.
